I am suffering from delayed 'Keralitis', a common affliction of Malayalis when they have stayed away from 'native' for a long time. While searching for Kerala information on Google I was catapulted into the thriving cyber world of the Malayalis. This is a vast unseen and unheard of world that most non Malayalis ( and a fair number of Malayalis) don't know about. There are sites dedicated to Malayalam Movies, Songs, Cookery, Dance, Drama, Blogs, you name it they have it. These sites have thousands of registered users and how come I know nothing about them???I have signed up for umpteen such sites. I have found a thriving online community from Moovattupuzha to Minnesota exchanging notes on topics like growing 'Kariveppu-ella' in Florida to making Payasam with Carnation Milk. There is an insatiable appetite for 'pazhan chollu' and 'pazham porris'. Malayalam is being written in English and italics be damned! There is a resurgent pride in being a Malayali. The Internet has united Malayalis like no trade union has.
Long live the online Malayali community!!!!

Echo!
I too sufferred from what you refer to as 'Keralitis'. So when in Raipur, I see any Malayalis, I would forget all my shyness and head onto them for conversation. I am reminded of home by their accents. I love that feeling.
It's only far from home that you actually see home.
But when you come to think of it, after 2 years outside God's Own Country, I think Malayalees are there everywhere. You see them doing all sorts of jobs in all sorts of places. The other day in a market in Bhopal, I was surprised to see a Malayalee fishmonger, and a vegetable seller who had Mangalam and all the other dreaded M-dailies for sale, sitting there bargaining freely in Malayalam to the hordes of Mallu's who came shopping there. I mentioned this to my Malayalee-acquaintance who lives in Bhopal. She replied quite sarcastically, "evideya illathathu".
Long Live the Community!
Proud to be part of it!
welcome to the revolution. we have found another willing conspirator.
its a really nice blog you have up here..great read..cheers..:-)
10 bonus points to you for mentioning Muvattupuzha/Moovattupuzha! :-)
Since you asked me,why "silverine"? A silver maned wolverine?
While "poomanam" sounds utterly delicate and willowy, why did u choose it?
@Ganjaturtle: Silverine was the name of a silver fox in a story, I read as a kid :) And poomanam was chosen for exactly the same reason you mentioned, it reminds me of green meadows, wide skies and flowers everywhere! Pretty girly huh? :)
Cool...liked the idea of a silver fox...have this vague feeling of deja vu abt the name but just cant fix it...Poomanam is quintessentially feminine-reminds of me of this character/song in a tamil movie called Indira...
Pretty gurly? Are you? Hmmm...right now seems slightly decent...will consider a possible upgrade after dispelling the mists of cyberspace and establishing direct optical contact ;-)
@ganja turtle: I meant the name poomanam is very girly :))
Ahh....thataways! ;-) Tempted to say somthing else...but lets not start the day by flirting! Chal, have a nice day, girly! ;-)
uh..spend 2 hours in office goin through ur previous blogs..ente ammo..am sad am laughing all at once..Just comes to my mind that your place must be somethin like taken straight from bobanum mollyum!!!! :)
Mathew: :p
Morbid fear of IT, Raja the rooster, love-hate relationship with bro M, Intcomm blues, the great Achayan comedy shows et al....had me glued...it was like surfing through channels at breakneck speed - pogo, animal planet, HBO, kahani ghar ghar ki , saans bhi kabhi naa lay ...(pant in anticpation).
Everything is present in generous measures . In black, blue and lots of yellow!
Took me one day and half of another to read all your posts ....right from the start in March-2005
Saw fellow references of you being the queen of blogworld....falls short....it does...
whats a tiny queen,
in comparison to silverine?! :)
Thanks for the shock and awe! I feel bombed! utterly butterly delighted with your posts!
One small request, can u keep 'em coming even faster than I can read 'em!
Srihari: Thank you dropping by and the really sweet things you have said :) Am glad that my ramblings interested you!
